Principal denies condom link to student stats

An Auckland principal is denying claims by some media that handing out condoms resulted in a rise in student achievement at his school.

A package of sexual health information, which included a condom, was given to some James Cook High School students in 2011 as part of a small research project.

Since that time, NCEA achievement rates have risen 30 percent.

But Principal Vaughan Couillault says there's more to the improvement than a minor intervention in sexual health guidance.

"We provide every available opportunity we can to make these kids able to succeed and do better tomorrow than they did yesterday."

Couillault believes some media have misleadingly emphasised that link.

"Obviously half of my school are boys, so those results aren't directly attributable to that piece of sexual health and guidance."

"However, for some individuals, that may have been the case."

Couillault says the school provides a range of services, with quality teaching being the main driver behind student achievement.
