The 26-year-old man rescued from the sea at Eastbourne on Monday has died.

Boobesh Palani passed away this morning at Wellington Hospital surrounded by friends.

Police have spoken to Mr Palani’s family, who would like to thank the Wellington community for their support over the last few days.

A Police spokesman says this is a tragedy, but thanks to the public’s help they were able to establish Mr Palani’s identity meaning his friends were at his side for his final few days.

Police are continuing to make enquiries into the events leading up to the accident.

Mr Palani's death has been referred to the coroner.
