Police sick of party attacks

Police say they are fed up with being attacked by out of control party goers.

Christchurch riot police arrested at least 10 people after an out of control party of over 200 revelers at Cranford Street over the weekend.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor says what's changed now is social media.

"And also the fact that when police and other authorities do arrive, is the utter contempt for them, and the preparedness for those organising the party to them blame the police for anything that occurs."

The invite went out on Facebook, it's believed it was only sent to around 100 people.

Alcohol Healthwatch director Rebecca Williams says using social media is incredibly dangerous.

"You can't control who's going to come, when they're going to come, you can't set any rules or expectations with them prior to them coming. Plus you throw alcohol into the mix and you've basically got a recipe for disaster."

Greg O'Connor says Fireworks were shot at police and bottles were thrown while officers shut down the party.

"What really rubs it in for police is when the organisers try and claim that it's the police's fault, ignoring conveniently that we've only ever been called because there was disorder in the first place."

The party has sparked fresh concern about young people and alcohol, with over a quarter drinking at a hazardous level.

Figures show 33% of 18 to 24-year-olds are drinking at a dangerous level.

Rebecca Williams says the party shows people's drinking is out of control.

"We do know that a lot of these sort of parties are associated with the younger age group. They're already our heaviest drinking group. The likelihood for harm is really high and parents need to make sure they have some sort of control."
