Play it safe, police warn as holidays end

Motorists are being asked to play it safe on one of the busiest driving days of the year.

The road toll sits at 10, less than 24 hours out from the end of the road toll period at 6am tomorrow, as tens of thousands of people are expected to return home from holiday destinations around the country.

National road policing manager Superintendent Steve Grealy said they don't want that number to rise any higher.

"We just want people to slow down, wear their seatbelts, don't drink and drive and for gods sake leave your cellphone in the glove box or get someone else to operate it while you're driving -it's just not worth the risk."

The families of people who die on the roads have to live with it for the rest for their lives, and those families are never the same again, Grealy said.
