Peace activists are promising to blockade Wellington's controversial annual weapons conference today.

Representatives from defence companies like Serco and Lockheed Martin will meet with Defence Force officials at the TSB Arena for the Defence Industry Association conference.

Peace Action Wellington spokeswoman Valerie Morse said the conference allows local companies to seek a share of the $2.1 billion Defence Force budget, but mostly it’s an opportunity for multinational weapons companies instead.

“They don’t discriminate in who they sell weapons to and they don’t discriminate on who uses their weapons, but they make money when their weapons are used."

Morse said it’s ironic the Government is buying weapons while officially advocating for peace.

“There’s a number of Government agencies and organisations that are involved in the promotion of art and culture and peacemaking and there are a number that are involved in war making.”
