UPDATED 12.42pm An elderly man has died after an incident in Lyttelton Harbour, though police cannot say yet what happened.
A police spokeswoman told Fairfax the incident was a near drowning and the person was pulled from the water.
However another spokeswoman told the Herald there were currently conflicting reports on whether or not the 77-year-old had actually been pulled from the water.Â
Paramedics treated the person at the scene, but they died, she confirmed.
The incident happened at Godley Quay about 10.15am.
