A person has died in a caravan fire in the Nelson suburb of Richmond.

Emergency services were sent to the caravan park next to the Waimea Town and Country Club just after eight o'clock.

A Fire Service spokesman has stated when fire fighters arrived they found a caravan well ablaze.

When the flames were extinguished, the body of a person was discovered inside the caravan.

Police and fire fighters remain at the scene, and investigations are underway.

The scene is now locked down for the night, with investigators returning in the morning.
