New Zealand teachers have been recognised as some of the world's most professional in a new OECD report.

The latest Teaching and Learning International Study out this morning ranks New Zealand fourth out of 35 countries for teacher professionalism.

The study of almost three-thousand intermediate and high schools showed teachers were similarly professional in richer and poorer schools.

In other countries there was drop off in lower socio-economic schools.

Education Minister Hekia Parata is happy with the results. “I think it’s a vote of quality in our teachers and I think it’s a vote of quality in our overall education system.”

However, the report also finds the Government needs to improve support for teaching research and professional networks.

Ms Parata claims that's something the Government is doing by setting up super-principals to oversee neighbouring schools. “That’s what our Communities of Learning [programme] is about and the $359 million dollar investment our government has made in them.”
