Be with the ones you love and keep family close.

That's the message from Victim Support following the country's double 7.5 magnitude earthquake yesterday morning.

CEO Kevin Tso said anyone who's feeling on edge with further aftershocks shouldn't hesitate to call family in the first instance.

"Make contact - because whether its yourself going through these anxious moments, or with friends and family, do check in, and check in frequently. Some people may not call out for help, but may actually appreciate help."

He said being prepared with how best to contact loved ones in the event of another aftershock will help look after people's mental well-being.

"Build up those networks and make sure they're in place, so that you've got some comfort in terms of having someone to turn to"

He said if that's not possible, contact Victim Support, the Red Cross, or the Salvation Army.

The quake has measured as being among the biggest to ever hit New Zealand - the most severe to was back in 1885 in the Wairarapa with a magnitude of 8.2.
