Council responds to breastfeeding furore

Updated 12:50pm:

Napier City Council has taken down a new sign on a public toilet which was thought to be encouraging mums to breastfeed in there.

The sign was posted on social media, with the suggestion it was telling mothers they should breastfeed their kids in the public toilet.

But council spokesperson Robyn McLean says that's not the case at all.

She says the council was contacted with a request for a bench and change table in the Dickens Street public toilets, so they put the sign up to show those facilities were now available.

"We support breastfeeding mothers feeding their children wherever they want to in the city. We were just simply following up an a request."

The bench and change table remain, for those still wishing to use the facilities.

There are no parenting rooms available in the city, and only a handful of public toilets.

Angry mums have taken to social media to voice their outrage, with a photo of the toilet being shared hundreds of times and attracting angry comments.

Many are lashing out saying it's disgusting and repulsive and they wouldn't even use the toilet to pee in.

One woman passing the toilet this morning was disgusted by the idea.

"Why should we have to go sit in there and feed our babies when everyone else can eat in every other public place, why do we have to sit in a public toilet and do it."
