Four fire appliances and 16 crew are still at a fire on the eastern side of Mount Victoria in Auckland's Devonport.

Earlier, smoke was billowing across the harbour as vegetation on the hill went up in flames.

Fire crews have got the blaze under control.

Photos of smoke billowing from the popular scenic spot were posted on social media.

On Twitter, Terry Baucher said firefighters were on the eastern slopes of Mt Victoria.

A photo he took showed the stream of a fireman's hose aiming into the smoke.

Others said the hillside had turned "black".
