Ministry urged to save school pools

The Ministry of Education is being urged to step in to stop any more school pool closures.

150 have closed over the last six years, with another 130 in danger.

Some schools have even resorted to Givealittle campaigns to try to raise funds.

Labour's Children's spokesperson Jacinda Ardern said schools are stretched too thin to cope.

"At least the Ministry of Education should start looking at these individual cases and saying in communities where there aren't many alternatives, what can we do to make sure children have access to a pool and can learn to swim."

Ardern says learning to swim is part of the curriculum, but schools can't afford it out of already tight operating budgets.

"Pools obviously are expensive to maintain, and schools are starting to struggle to keep them up to standard."

"At the moment the Ministry of Education is sitting back and just letting those pools close."
