Millions of dollars of luxury cars board the Interislander ferry

More than 30 Bruce McLaren sportscars worth millions of dollars are crossing the Cook Strait.

The cars boarded the Interislander’s Kaitake ferry just after 8am today.

One of them, an F1, is worth more than $20 million alone.

The cars are a part of The Bruce McLaren Epic New Zealand tour, which is making its way from Auckland to Queenstown.

Famous British racing car driver Derek Bell was among those taking part in the tour.

He raced in New Zealand during the late 1960s and was friends with McLaren.

Bell said the rough New Zealand roads did not worry him too much.

“Everybody keeps saying there are lots of pot holes but we’re quite capable drivers and probably can miss them.”

Bell said the cars were versatile.

“People aren’t going to spend big money on a car if they can’t drive them.”

He said the millions of dollars the cars cost did not faze him either.

“I don’t think at all about it and just drive it and hope that I don’t crash it and so far I’ve been quite lucky.”

Drivers did however have some difficulty navigating the lumps and bumps in the bridge crossing onto the ferry this morning.

Most swerved sideways to get the cars over the bridge connection unscathed.

When Bell heard about the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which devastated Kaikoura he was not sure whether the tour would go ahead.

“And then it came back to us that really perhaps people needed to see something a bit exciting and enlightening to take their minds of their problems but we’re terribly aware of it,” he said.

The convoy will stop in Hamner for a night and Bell said he hoped it would give the town a boost following the earthquake.

Bell’s McLaren on the tour is an unmistakable 675 LT.

“It’s basically orange with some pretty violent colours and it certainly isn’t the prettiest car but it’s the most striking colour wise.

“It’s just a beautiful car very comfortable and my wife is very happy sitting there,” he said.
