People who've been shifting a lot of goods through TradeMe could soon be getting some feedback from Inland Revenue.

The IRD has taken legal steps to demand the details of nearly a million TradeMe users, looking for people who should be paying tax.

The company's head of trust and safety, Jon Duffy, says the company resisted the initial request because of the size...but has now handed over information on 44,000 users.

"I think it's safe to assume that the people targeted are more at the commercial end of the spectrum, not mum and dad who sell a washing machine one a year on TradeMe."

The story has only come to light because TradeMe publishes a transparency report.
