An emergency housing provider says more needs to be done to analyse the bigger problem of Christchurch's housing unaffordability.

Social housing minister Paula Bennett announced the second round of funding from a pool of $33 million for emergency housing providers yesterday.

However, Canterbury barely registers, with the Comcare Charitable Trust, the Christchurch Methodist Mission, the Salvation Army and the Women's Refuge being given around $186,000 to provide just under 120 extra places.

Christchurch Methodist Mission executive director Jill Hawkey said the funding boost is a good start.

"While this a welcome first step we need to continually look at those long term housing issues - particularly in Christchurch the issue is affordability."

Ms Hawkey said they are concerned no emergency accommodation is available for young people.

"Young people in our community are incredibly vulnerable and at risk. We really do need to be looking at how we're providing emergency accommodation and long term accommodation for young people as well."

Christchurch Central MP Nicky Wagner said the extra money will all help make a difference.

"There's quite a lot of change happening in housing in Christchurch but what we really want to do is beef up this emergency housing."
