Foxton residents told to reduce water use

Residents in the Foxton and Foxton Beach areas are being told to turn off their sprinklers and hoses.

The Horowhenua District Council has asked everyone to reduce their water use to ensure demand does not exceed supply.

Water supplies are under a "Level 2 restriction", the council said, which means the use of sprinklers, soak hoses, irrigation of parks and gardens, hosing of paved areas and windows and cars is forbidden.

Houses with even street numbers can use handheld hoses, watering cans or buckets on even dates, and those with odd street numbers can use them on odd calendar dates.

Windows and cars can only be cleaned using a bucket or watering can filled from a tap.

Restrictions

1. Private gardens -- watering

Garden sprinklers and soak hoses must not be used at any time.

Handheld hoses, watering cans or buckets can be used as follows: -- Houses with even street numbers on even dates

- Houses with odd street numbers on odd dates

2. Public parks and gardens and road reserves -- watering

Irrigation in parks and gardens will be turned off. (Council reserves are irrigated using bore water, which does not affect the town supply.)

3. Paved areas -- cleaning

Hosing of paved areas is banned unless cleaning is required as a result of an accident, fire, health hazard or other emergency. The use of a bucket filled directly from a tap is allowed any time

4. Window cleaning and vehicles

Water must not be used except by means of a bucket or watering can filled directly from a tap
