Fox Glacier recovery 'incredibly difficult task'

The wreckage of the horror Fox Glacier helicopter crash will be taken to Wellington today.

All seven people onboard were killed in Saturday's crash.

The remaining three bodies left on the ice, and all of the selected wreckage, were brought down yesterday during windows of clear weather.

Alpine Cliff Rescue team leader Marius Bron said the recovery was an incredibly difficult task.

"We're having to be managing ourselves all the time with the popcorn-like ice - I've used that term before but it really is unstable, it's moving."

Where possible, the wreckage was plotted, photographed, and inspected at the scene by the lead investigator and an engineering expert.

Bron said the team were on high alert.

"It's noisy, the glacier is creaking and groaning a bit, it's steep and slippery so you're just on high alert all the time."

Three loads of wreckage - including the rotor blades, transmission, engine, tail boom and cabin - will be driven to Wellington to be examined.

Initial interviews and evidence collection are expected to be completed today.

The inquiry is likely to involve input from investigators from France, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.
