Family of Myanmar prisoner desperate for action

The family of a Wellington man whose son is being kept in horrific conditions in a Myanmar prison, is frustrated at the lack of real action from the New Zealand Government.

Philip Blackwood has been imprisoned for 10 months for using an image of Buddha wearing headphones to promote the bar he managed.

His father Brian Lockwood said his son's situation is becoming dire, and they're fearful of his mental state.

Mr Blackwood said their family has received consular help but they feel it is not enough.

"We are getting what's known as consular help in arranging the visits to the prison, and they're been very good on that but that's a consular level help and that's all they can do - they're not interested in whether he's innocent or now, which he is."

He said Philip has lost over 25 kilograms and sleeps on wooden pallets in his cell.
