UPDATED 1.57PM: Tickets to the Super Rugby grand final in Wellington have completely sold out.

On Monday, around 30,000 tickets to the game between the Hurricanes and the Highlanders had been sold in 59 seconds.

This morning, some fans queued overnight and in the freezing cold for a chance to buy some of the 2000 physical tickets, while 3000 extra tickets sold online were gone within minutes.

Whare Moke was the first person to get to the prize. He had been waiting since 5pm last night outside Te Papa, and said it was worth the 15-hour wait.

Margaret Bosher has been lining up since 4am, and the cold didn't put her off.

"Get a ticket. That's all I want. Hubby's asleep, obviously, and I've just basically come down here to get a ticket. I know we might be sitting separately, but so long as I'm at the game," she said.

"Oh, I love the 'Canes mate. It's just dedication to the 'Canes."

Highlanders fan Scott Easton waited all night, and was the tenth person in the line.

"It was a hard night. I got about twenty minutes sleep. Now I'm realising that people are turning up at 9am and getting tickets," he said.

"Big time rugby fan" Rewi Wairau was one of the first fans to arrive yesterday evening.

"I've been to all the games at the Westpac and just couldn't get a ticket, so that's why I'm here," he said.

Hurricanes Prop Mike Kainga turned up around 6am with some McDonald's for those showing their dedication.

"It's amazing," Kainga said. "It's amazing."

"I couldn't really sleep to be honest, I thought I had to do something so I brought down some hot chockies and I may have had a sneaky hash brown myself but let's not tell the trainers."

Three other Hurricanes players made a special delivery of pizza and other treats to the fans last night.

Hurricanes CEO James Te Puni believes that with increased capacity, they'll be able to seat around 36,000.

"Whatever happens, we're talking about a new record for Super Rugby at Westpac. We'll definitely be chocka," he said.

Nicki Smith and John Crawford got tickets to the game - but he's unable to make it because he's working.

They decided to go down to Te Papa were fans were queuing, and give it away.

She's been going through breast cancer, and said "people have been amazing to us, so we thought we'd just pay it forward."

"We didn't want to scalp it, we don't believe in that, the $50 doesn't really mean anything either."

However, anyone who does snap up a last minute ticket to the rugby might struggle to find somewhere to sleep.

A look at booking website Trivago shows Wellington's hotels and motels are almost full ahead of the Super Rugby final between the Hurricanes and the Highlanders.

Hospitality Association Wellington manager Dylan Firth said people might need to look at booking a little bit out of town.

"The great thing about the stadium is that it is hooked up to transport links. It's at the end of a bus station and train line, there are plenty of hotels up the coast."
