Chch court staff face tough restructure

The Government is under attack after suggesting some Christchurch court staff work from home, and stump up some of the costs.

There are more than 100 proposed job cuts nationwide, in a groundbreaking courts restructure.

Around 14 Christchurch jobs would be disestablished, with staff having to re-apply for just a handful of positions.

Those working at home won't get extra financial support, have to communicate through web-cam and will only get Ministry support to move house once every two years.

PSA national organiser for the Ministry of Justice Tracy Klenner said it's simply unfair.

"It's the ongoing costs we have concerns about for our members, especially in regards to increased power and the fact that it's the employer's responsibility under Health and Safety to ensure people have appropriate heating and ventilation in their work space."

She said they're under attack from the Ministry, who should be protecting their jobs instead.

Labour's court spokesperson Louisa Wall is disgusted.

"The only conclusion I can draw is that they're trying to put in place conditions that are completely unacceptable so the workers don't take them, which then justifies some sort of privitisation of this aspect of the Ministry of Justice's work," she said.

Ms Wall said it's time to take a stand.

"Hopefully the people of Christchurch will get behind a workforce that has delivered really good results, not only for Canterbury and for the Ministry of Justice, but for the people of New Zealand."

A final decision is expected today.
