Auckland council has said it never intended to charge schools for using parks.
Point Chevalier School was told it had to pay $90 to hold its end of year picnic at Coyle Park on the beach, which has angered surrounding city schools.
Auckland Councillor and chair of the parks, recreation and sports committee, Christine Fletcher, said she spoke to the bylaws chair, Callum Penrose, today.
"She said to me it was never intended that there be charging for schools to use parks except in perhaps a case where they may be having a commercial activity on the park."
Fletcher is calling for a review of the bylaw, which only came in on July first.
"We don't want any road blocks in terms of children enjoying our beautiful Auckland park network, particularly when you're looking at intensification."
