UPDATED 4.10pm: A boy seriously injured at an Invercargill school has been transferred to Dunedin Hospital.

The 10-year-old suffered a serious head injury at Sacred Heart School at about 8.30 this morning.

He was first taken to Invercargill Hospital before being moved to Dunedin.

He's described as being in a critical condition.

The Ministry of Education and victim support are supporting the school.

Police are still trying to work out how this incident occurred

They are working alongside the school's administration and the Ministry of Education to work out what happened to the young boy.

It appears this may have been a tragic accident.
