The public crowdfunding campaign to buy a slice of Abel Tasman National Park has drawn to a close, with more than 39,000 people pledging money.

However the final amount won't be known until after the tender process to buy the beach closes.

What is known, is that it's somewhere above the $2 million mark.

Organiser Duane Major says he's ecstatic.

"It started at Christmas and today it's ending on my birthday," he said.

"The whole idea is that it's a gift, and we'd like people to enjoy that."

Tenders need to be locked in by four o'clock tomorrow afternoon, and the owners of the land then have five days to make a decision.

The Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand said the crowdfunding campaign is proof that Kiwis care about conservation, but more money could be spent to preserve New Zealand's natural beauty.

The Department of Conservation receives $315 million per year in funding.

Clubs president Robin McNeill said it should be getting more.

"What is really needed is more money for Doc so we can [...] increase the land that is really special to us as New Zealanders."
