UPDATED: 12.46PM A mountaineering group is slamming a controversial proposal that would see the Department of Conservation dramatically increase the number of helicopter landings on a Fiordland glacier.
The proposal allows the number of daily landings on Mount Tutoko glacier, the highest peak in the Fiordland National Park, to rise from 14 to 80.
Federated Mountain Clubs president Robin McNeil said they're against any increase in landings because it isn't allowed for in the National Park's management plan.
"The current management plan doesn't really allow for it and not in a useful manner so we could we see ways that could be change a little bit."
He said 80 landings a day actually means 160 over-flights.
"Five minutes to get to the site from Milford Sound and five minutes to get back, you'd have a helicopter in the air all the time."
McNeil said that will create more noise pollution for tourists travelling through Milford Sound.
