Age Concern is distressed but not surprised at a survey showing there is a lack of access to dental care for people over the age of 65.
The Ministry of Health's Older People's Oral Health Survey shows one third of those over 65 suffer from untreated tooth decay.
Canterbury Chief Executive Simon Templeton said there is an aging population who are living longer, but their teeth aren't keeping up.
"Dentistry just isn't something that can be looked at when you actually need to look at putting food on your table or keeping warm during winter, so cost is a huge issue."
Templeton added dental campaigns so often focus on youth, when in reality it's a problem for all ages.
"The messages that are portrayed around oral health are really directed at younger people. This survey really highlights that oral health is an issue that we face our whole lives."
