UPDATED 3.50PM Burglaries are on the rise and the opposition says it's because police are under-resourced.
New Statistics New Zealand figures show an increase of 11 percent in break-ins over the past year. That's in contrast to the Government's claim that crime levels are falling.
Labour's police spokesman Stuart Nash said Minister for Police Judith Collins needs to step up and ask for more funding.
"I think what she needs to do is go to the Minister of Finance and say 'Hey Bill, we need some more money in this budget and without more funding, there's not much more I can do'."
Stuart Nash thinks police do the best they can with limited resources, but the buck stops with the Government.Â
He said the Government need to give more money to the police force "so they can be better equipped to solve crime, as well as prevent crime."
