Havelock North is finding its feet after the campylobacter outbreak that's been crippling the region.

It's been more than a week since the worst outbreak of waterborne disease in New Zealand's recent history began to wreak havoc.

As of yesterday, there were 125 confirmed cases and 351 probable cases of campylobacter infection.

Tukituki MP Craig Foss said it's been an unprecedented event for New Zealand, and the Council has been doing its best.

He said communication is improving and now it's a matter of waiting for test results.

"I think everybody does agree we've probably turned a corner, the medical results will prove that one way or the other, and now...as we go down the investigations stage, [it's more] what on earth went wrong in the first place," he said.

Foss said, while the town's still sombre, things are improving.

"The mood's turning, people are going in for dinner a bit. but a lot of our batteries are still drained and we do need time to charge them back up.

"But it it is really good to see some certainty and action and some confirmation that the rates of infection are declining."

He said the community is grateful for the support of both Kiwis and companies that have donated bottled water and the like to the area.

The Hastings and Flaxmere water supplies have also been affected, but are chlorinated and safe to drink.
