Auckland schools are on alert, after the scale of a mumps outbreak's been revealed.

There have been 300 cases of mumps in Auckland in just eight months - that's more than the total number of cases in the region over the last 16 years.

And Auckland Regional Public Health Service said there's a high chance of further cases in schools.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Josephine Herman said children's education could suffer if the outbreak worsens.

She said infected children have to stay home for five days, and those exposed to mumps are required to stay home from day 12 to day 25, of coming in contact with the infection.
