UPDATED 6.27PM Police are still at the scene of a fatal crash on State Highway One near Moeraki Boulders in Otago.

Acting Senior Sergeant Sam Ramsay says the crash involved three cars - not four as previously reported.

One person has died at the scene.

One person was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital and two others were transported to Oamaru Hospital.

None of their injuries are deemed life threatening.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Sate Highway One road is down to one lane while Police complete a scene examination.
