UPDATED 5.56pm: One man has been critically injured in an incident near a Rotorua primary school today.
Police were called to the Western Heights suburb at 2.40 this afternoon after reports of hearing gunshots.
A witness at the scene said they saw about 12 people fighting in the street after hearing gunshots.
He said he saw a person running down the street wielding an axe.
Police have stated that two people were taken to Rotorua hospital, but the injuries are not believed to be life threatening and one of the men has now left the hospital.
A witness told the Rotorua Daily Post he also heard gunshots.
"I heard two big ones then I saw a couple of cars and a guy running across the field so he couldn't have been that hurt. Then the cops showed up and that's all I saw."
An ambulance north communications spokeswoman confirmed they were attending an incident in the area but would give no further details.
Four men have been arrested in relation to the incident and police say they will be maintaining an active presence at the scene but there is no threat to public safety.
Police are calling for anyone with information that has not yet come forward to call the Rotorua police station on (07) 3480099.
