
Updated 8:00pm: Coromandel residents are being urged to stay home tonight while the region is hit by pockets of flooding.
Police are warning members of public in the Thames-Coromandel district of flooding and slips in the region.
There is flooding and debris on Whangapoua Rd in Te Rerenga, and Port Charles Rd at Waikawau is blocked after large slips.
There is deep water on the Thames Coast Rd in Tapu and large slips on Thames Hikuai Rd, which is blocked.
Thames Coast Rd at Ruamahunga also has flooding and deep water, and Manaia Rd is blocked because of severe flooding.
Roads have disappeared under water in Coromandel town, where the Fire Service has been busy taking calls from people leaving flooded homes to flee to higher ground.
One woman was evacuated from her home after being trapped by flood waters.
The Thames-Coromandel District Council says in the wider region, there is a big slip at the intersection of Waikawau Beach and Port Charles Rds, while Fletcher Bay Rd was flooded at the Ohinewai Ford and no vehicles could get across.
There is also severe flooding on State Highway 25 towards Manaia, and flooding in Colville.
People are being urged to avoid the areas if they don't have to drive through.
MetService has warned 50 to 80 millimetres of rain could fall over four to six hours in Coromandel and western Bay of Plenty, before the front moves across to eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne overnight.
Authorities say damaged properties in Coromandel will be dealt with in the morning.
Firefighters have been busy responding to SOS calls from flood-hit residents of Coromandel town.
Fire Service shift manager Jaron Phillips said crews were called to a house in Albert St by residents worried about rising water, who ultimately made it safely to higher ground.
There are also reports of flooding on Wharf Rd.
Civil Defence is urging people to stay home and not go out in their cars.
