A police car and two others have been written off after a young driver failed to stop at a stop sign in Gisborne last night.

A young Auckland man allegedly drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Wharerata and Awapuni Road and straight into a police car, which then crashed into another car.

The driver has been charged with refusing to give a blood specimen and is likely to face further charges.

Police say speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
