UPDATED 9.10am:Â A man is in custody after armed police swooped on an address in New Plymouth early this morning.
Police have been saying little about the incident in Upper Vogeltown.
Cordons had been put in place on Carrington Street, from the junction with Huatoki Street to the intersection at Tarahua Road.
Newstalk ZB reporter Josh Price is at the scene, and said the "whole area has relaxed".
"The tension that was here before has certainly gone. It appears a man was put into a police car not too long ago and the cordon is breaking up.
Police have just confirmed the situation is over.
Earlier, a woman on Carrington Street said police rang both her home phone and her cell phone telling her not to leave.
She was told to stay away from windows and not to look out.
But the woman said she could see a lot of police with guns, as well as police dogs.
She was woken at 6.20 this morning by someone on a megaphone, telling someone to come out with their hands up.
