Thousands of people have signed a petition to save Redcliffs School in Christchurch, with a submission on keeping the school open, due today.

The Board of Trustees rebuffs Education Minister Hekia Parata's claims the cliff behind the school is hazardous, and any future rockfall would disrupt the school.

The petition which started two weeks ago, has more than 4000 signatures.

It won't count towards today's submission, which needs fresh information in support of keeping the school open.

Hekia Parata said she's keeping an open mind.

"I know what the board has said at different times. My thoughts will be informed by the board's final submission when it comes in," she said.

"We've given extensive extra time than is required under the law, because I want to give the Redcliffs community as much opportunity as possible to consider all the factors they consider important."

A date for a final decision hasn't been set.
