Members of the transgender community are welcoming a primary school's decision, to install a gender-neutral toilet.
The unisex facility has been put in at a school in Auckland so a six-year-old transgender pupil can feel safe and accepted.
The school's Board and the Education Ministry both support the move, which is aimed at helping the child transition from a boy to a girl.
Shelly Te Waiariki Howard said it's a positive move for New Zealand overall.
"These sorts of steps are a move towards including a more diversity-friendly and a diversity-positive outlook in the wider community narrative."
Rainbow Youth said it's a good move as the school is leading the way, by showing other schools the sky doesn't fall in if the school has a gender-neutral or unisex bathroom.
A recent survey found just over 9,000 school-aged children in New Zealand identify as transgender.
