Police investigating the death of a woman in West Auckland are appealing for sightings of a man in a green and white tracksuit.

The body of 69-year-old Cun Xiu Tian was found in her Te Atatu home on Friday after a vicious and prolonged attack.

A man was seen in the Glenvil Lane area around lunchtime on the day of the murder.

Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small said yesterday that whoever attacked Tian would have been covered in blood, and may have been seen trying to wash it off or dispose of their clothing.

They want to hear from anyone who's seen a man aged in his twenties, wearing a green and white tracksuit, and a white baseball cap.

Sightings can be given by phoning 0800 77 22 71 or the Henderson Police Station on 09 839 0600.

A public vigil will be held for Tian at Te Atatu Baptist Church tonight where a big turnout is expected.

Local MP Phil Twyford noted the tight-knit neighbourhood, which makes the attack particularly shocking.

Twyford said the community wants to express their disappointment at what has happened, a chance for people to show solidarity with the bereaved family and show solidarity.

Neighbours will walk to Tian's house after the vigil to lay flowers.
