A man who says he was assaulted by a group of youths, including Beauen Wallace-Loretz, last September has spoken out.

17-year-old Wallace-Loretz is currently on the run from police after allegedly bashing a man to death in Epsom in Auckland in December.

Wallace-Loretz is jointly charged with Leonard Nattrass-Berquist for the murder of 54-year-old Ihaia Gillman-Harris at an Epsom motel in December.

He had assistance to cut off his home detention bracelet on Thursday night.

Mario Koch says he was bashed into unconsciousness by the teenager the night before Father's Day last year.

He says a group of males from a party next door were throwing rocks and pieces of timber over his fence, so he went to confront them.

"The next thing I actually remember was me laying on the ground with blood on my face."

Koch says assault charges were laid against the group only when police reopened the investigation, some 5 months later.

"My wife is scared the whole time that those guys actually come back, and she was very scared when police stopped investigating and didn't lay any charges, until earlier this year."

The Sensible Sentencing Trust is pointing the finger at parliament over Wallace-Loretz's escape.

Founder Garth McVicar says it's an absolute debacle that the 17-year-old was on bail in the first place.

He says people are appalled, and it's essentially the justice system that's failed us.

"Ultimately, the judges know what's going on, the judges are the gatekeepers of society."

"The public are being failed incredibly badly and sadly in cases in cases like this."

McVicar says public safety is being jeopardised when it's so easy for an alleged murderer to cut off their ankle bracelet and escape police.

"I don't believe anybody who is charged with murder should even be considered for bail. End of story."

"Until we get to that position, we're going to keep having this debacle time and time again."

Detective Inspector Scott Beard says officers are talking to his family and friends about where Wallace-Loretz could be.

"There's been nothing on social media at this stage that would alert us to anything like that.

"In regards to the border authorities, we've contacted them just to ensure that he doesn't leave the country."

Beard says anyone helping hide him should think about the possible consequences, and give him up.
