A campaign is underway to push for at least 25 years in prison for people who kill the vulnerable in unprovoked attacks.
A Givealittle page is being launched this morning to raise money for Sensible Sentencing to lobby for a law change or to push for a referendum.
Spokesman for the organisation, Scott Guthrie, says it follows the downgrading of charges from murder to manslaughter for the killing of three-year-old Moko Rangitoheriri at the hands of his caregivers.
"That's not manslaughter, that's murder," he said.
He said the murder verdict should be handed down to anyone who kills someone under the age of 16, the elderly and the mentally impaired.
Mr Guthrie said people are totally outraged over what happened to Moko Rangitoheriri and the sentence his killers were given, and politicians need to take notice.
"They can't run anywhere. If we've got the right amount of signatures on it and the nation gets behind us, we're in. They have to make the change."
