A warning that a focus on burglaries, will mean police resources are taken away from other issues.

The government has announced burglaries will become a priority, with police now set to attend every burglary.

Police association president Greg O'Connor told Rachel Smalley it's a good idea.

"Like all things as long as it's resourced it will work. So if we're going to put the resource into that area it's going to come from somewhere else."

Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Allan Boreham told Mike Hosking it's not just about solving more burglaries.

"But it's also about supporting the victim. Giving them the right advice and giving us the best chance of understanding what their understanding is and preventing it in the future."

Mr Boreham said it's not that much more work, but it's important.

"We've spoken to the district commanders about it and they believe they can do it."

Dairy owners want theft from their shops included in the new police initiative.

The Association of Dairies president Neil Patel said they have been calling on police to take prompt action on reports of thefts from shops.

He appreciates burglaries have now become a priority, but believes theft from dairies should also be given top priority.

Mr Patel said currently some of the members don't want to call police because they feel no action will be taken - so why waste their time.

"We had a member report things were stolen. Nothing happened. [Police] said it was a minor offence and we can't get them."
