There are reports that the two young teens critically injured on a North Canterbury road had been drinking and playing chicken with vehicles before they were struck.

14-year-old Isaak Strom - and 13-year-old Jonathan Krupinski - remain in Christchurch Hospital after they were hit on Oxford Road in Fernside about 9.20 on Saturday night.

A relative says one of the boys was playing chicken with the cars, and the other boy ran out to save him.

"I understand alcohol was a factor. Jonathan was actually staying at Isaac's house that evening for a sleep over or a stay over."

Police have said the motorist who struck the pair was not at fault.
