Sharemilkers will be discussing ways to get through the next season at a series of meetings around the country this week.
Federated Farmers and Dairy NZ are holding a nationwide road show for sharemilkers affected by low dairy prices. Fonterra reduced its forecast payout for the next season from $4.15 per kilo of milk solids to just $3.90 last week.
Lawyers, accountants, bankers and sharemilkers' employers have also been invited to the meetings.
Federated Farmers Sharemilkers Group chairman Neil Filer said they want to get everyone in the room together to find a way forward.
"Just trying to find some options to renegotiate some contracts or find some clauses that we can all agree on to get these businesses through another twelve months".
Filer said the long-term fundamentals of dairy are strong.
"The young people are the best ones that are positioned to take advantage when the job does come right. We just want to make sure many of these young, skilled people are still in the industry at the end of it".
Now Government intervention is being called for, which Labour Leader Andrew Little favours, because he sees there's a risk of farmland going into foreign hands if dairy farmers are left to fail.
He said if that is the consequence then the Government needs to act in the best interests of New Zealanders, step in and take control of the situation.
