UPDATED 10.08am: New Zealand businesses are being urged to tap into the changing taste of the Indian market.

There's a feeling this country's trade with India is lagging behind in the shadows of China.

A summit is being held this Friday in Auckland to discuss trade opportunities between the two countries.

India New Zealand Business Council chairman Sunil Kaushal says India wants New Zealand technology and there's increasing demand for our food and beverage.

He says they want to taste New Zealand wine and produce like apple and kiwi fruit.

Mr Kaushal says New Zealand lamb is very well know in India, so that emerging market, is not looking at New Zealand just for innovation.

So far the spotlight has been on China with trade exceeding $20 billion, while India has lagged behind with trade around $1.6 billions a year.

Kaushal says there's demand for our technology.

"Where India lacks are in the fields of innovation, which New Zealand certainly has a lot to offer."

Kaushal says India is also lacking in information communication technology (ICT).
