UPDATED 5:03pm: Auckland police have confirmed they've ticketed several Uber drivers for using meters that are illegal here.

Two passengers were told to get out of the Ubercar they were in this morning after it was issued an infringement notice.

Acting District Commander Inspector Jim Wilson says they made sure the passengers had a safe way to get home.

He says the matter is before the courts and they won't be commenting further.

But Uber have lodged complaints with the Independent Police Conduct Authority and claim they're operating within the law.

Uber have lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

Uber spokeswoman Katie Curran says in recent weeks a police officer in Auckland has targeted Uber partners to falsely issue fines claiming an iPhone is being used as a taxi meter.

She says they've filed complaints with the Independent Police Conduct Authority for what she calls unacceptable and potentially dangerous behaviour.

The Taxi Federation is pleased Auckland police appear to be cracking down on the Uber car service.

Taxi Federation Executive Director Robert Heale says they predicted this would start happening as the app is illegal here.

He says they're delighted to see the NZTA are taking positive action.
