Order sought to halt Ports work

More legal action is underway in the ongoing Ports of Auckland saga.

Stanley Point resident Carol Banks is seeking interim orders to temporarily stop work on the Bledisloe Wharf extension.

The application is currently being considered at the High Court in Auckland.

The judge may decide to have the application heard alongside Urban Auckland's hearing in five weeks' time.

Meanwhile, the Government is refusing to wade into the ongoing Ports of Auckland debate - but says expansion will happen, it's inevitable.

Bill English says the Government knows better than to get into disagreements between councils and their entities.

The Finance Minister says how ports and local bodies deal with the growing economy is up to them.

"One way or another there's going to be more imports and exports in the upper North Island."

"Someone has to have the port capacity to deal with them."

English says New Zealand has an interest in Auckland resolving the argument, getting on with it, and having an efficient port.
