'No surprise' Police feel over-stressed, under-prepared, says Labour

Labour says it's no surprise police officers feel over-stressed, under-prepared and under-appreciated.

The annual Police workplace survey reveals a majority of officers don't think they get enough training.

They also believe the force fails to live up to the promises it makes to the public.

And more than half of the officers surveyed think the stress at work is unacceptable.

Labour's police spokesperson Stuart Nash said the solution is simple.

"These people are passionate about their communities and they love the Police force, but they know that they just haven't got the resources to be able to do the job properly. There's only one way to solve that, and that is actually more Police on the ground."

Mr Nash said the government needs to act now.

"If I was the Minister of Police, I would be taking this very seriously, and getting hold of the Commissioner, saying hey you've got to come with me, we're going to sit down the the Prime Minister and present a very strong business case around how and why we need these Police immediately. We can't wait for the next Budget."
