Blunder halts MP pay bill

UPDATED 3.50PM: It's looking unlikely a Bill cutting pay rises for MPs will make it before Parliament this week.

The Bill was supposed to have been debated under urgency last night but it was pulled after it emerged errors in the Bill would have seen MPs getter larger pay increases, not smaller ones.

Green Party Co-Leader Metiria Turei says the situation's the result of a knee-jerk reaction from the Government.

"There's no chance this bill will get into the house this week."

"National clearly have got to redo their maths, and rethink their policy."

The Government says technical matters are delaying it and is rejecting opposition assertions the Bill was flawed and could have led to MPs getting a larger pay increase.

Cabinet Minister Michael Woodhouse is signalling the Bill will go before Parliament next week.

"I'm confident we'll have the legislation passed by next Thursday."
