A person has died and another has life-threatening injuries after a crash in the Christchurch suburb of Linwood tonight.

Emergency services were alerted to the two-car crash on Worcester St at 6.30pm. Police are still at the scene.

Three people have been taken to hospital following the crash. One suffered critical injuries while a second person's injuries were described as serious. A third is in a moderate condition.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating and the road will be closed for some time.

Diversions are in place at the England and Tancred St intersections.

Police thanked motorists for their patience.
