UPDATED 8.48PM:

A man is still on the run following tonight's shooting in New Plymouth.

Police are looking for 43-year-old Kerryn Tioro in relation to the shooting.

Police say he is possibly armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

“Our absolute priority is ensuring the safety of the community,” police said in a statement.

“Anyone who knows where Kerryn Tioro is should call 111 immediately.”

The Armed Offenders Squad were called to Marama Crescent in New Plymouth at around 5pm, where a man had been shot.

Local woman Joss Coppin heard two very large bangs about five seconds apart.

"It woke up the dogs and then they barked and carried on. I never gave it another thought until I went and shut the venetians, and I saw the flashing lights.

Neighbour Debby Sarten said she's been relying on media reports to understand what's happening outside her window.

"The armed offenders turned up and I thought that's not good, something's going on. So I've been watching it out the window and watching it all unfold."

Sarten said it's not the first time there's been violent crime on the street.

"I've seen a few stabbings going on, but this is the first time I've heard of someone firing a gun, which is not good."

The man is in a serious but stable condition.

He has been airlifted to Waikato hospital for further treatment.

Police and armed offenders squad are still at the scene.
