A cup day liquor ban around Riccarton Park Racecourse has been approved by the Christchurch City Council.

The unanimous decision was made at today's monthly meeting.

The ban will be put into place from 7am to midnight, with police agreeing to have staff deployed between those hours.

The areas affected would include Yaldhurst Road, Middlepark Road, Epsom Road, Racecourse Road, Buchanans Road and Masham Road.

It's hoped the move will reduce the risk of alcohol-induced crime, disorder and improve safety for cup day attendees.
