UPDATED: 8.54PM: SH1 has reopened after a serious crash this afternoon in Huntly.

LISTEN ABOVE: Reporter Nikki Preston spoke to Larry Williams and said a silver vehicle travelling towards Hamilton crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound truck.

A man and two young boys have been confirmed dead.

A woman in her late twenties is in a critical condition and a nine-year-old girl has serious injuries from the crash on State Highway One, just after 2.30pm.

Firefighters cut the woman and the girl from the vehicle, but the bodies of the man and two boys are still inside.

Huntly Volunteer fire chief Craig Bush said he understands both women, who are in Waikato Hospital, have serious head injuries.

Counselling is being offered to his team of volunteers, after what has been a very rough day for them.

The incident occurred at 2:40 this afternoon on State Highway 1 near Rayner Road.

The truck driver has emerged from the crash uninjured, but the two other people in the car have critical and serious injuries.

Waikato Rescue Helicopter flew the 9-year-old girl and woman to Waikato Hospital.

The girl is in a serious condition, while the woman's condition was upgraded to critical on her way to hospital.
